When Vicki Sokolik’s son brought home a friend from school—an A student who had left her unsafe home and was dropping out to work full-time—Sokolik became aware of the invisible population of homeless young people in this country. These are youth afraid of the foster system: victims of intergenerational poverty, neglect, racism, homophobia, transphobia, domestic and sexual abuse, and addiction. Unable to live at home, they sleep on friends’ couches, in parks, on streets. With no access to government IDs or parental signatures, they can’t get jobs or driver’s licenses or apply to college. They have no safety net and no adult guidance.
IF YOU SEE THEM is a powerful examination of the issue of youth homelessness, told through the experience of one woman at the forefront of an effort to address the issue. An inspiring account of grassroots action and social justice, it also gives voice to the youth themselves, who tell their own stories.
